SantiagoIt is interesting to learn that Big Sean is actually a super cute, average-height, slim Detroit player, so no, not big at all (well, considering all that meets the eye). But this year he has proved he is going to be bigger than any one could ever dream. It has been a short three years since Big Sean joined the prolific G.O.O.D. Music team established by Kanye West, and already, the rapper has dropped off three mixtapes with an album on the way in 2011. He most recently delivered his third and final installment of his mixtapes, Finally Famous Vol. 3: B.I.G., and you bet, it had us all rapping along. So what is the debut album going to look like, you wonder? Sean tells us, “It’s really going to be something that’s going to take the game by surprise and it’s going to be so good quality and shit. That’s my whole biggest thing, is making sure it’s quality; Making sure people get that representation of me.”
Big Sean was singled out for having one of the best verses on the G.O.O.D. Music cypher at the BET Hip Hop Awards this year and already, without an album out, this big fella has a flood of people feeling his flow. We all know Mr. West’s cosigns are never hand-outs. Sean’s mentor says he’s going to be ‘the greatest in the game.’ But this artist is simply doing what he loves, without trying to live up to a name; “I remember I’m here for a reason, I got signed for a reason. You just always gotta remember that and just be confident in yourself. I feel like I’m the best rapper ever, honestly. I just gotta prove it to the world.”
The young artist has been bouncing around the country doing tons of shows and press, we got to chop it up with the man behind the supa-dupa flow while here in NYC. We started his day off one morning at the Blind Barber in the LES. Sean came decked out in his signature POW chains, a hint of YSL–and just to fuck with us–a nicely placed red handkerchief in his T-shirt pocket, along with his favorite MCM luggage. We can co-sign, that Detroit guys are styling. We ended the shoot on a different night Uptown in his room at the Time Hotel, just before flying out to another city for yet another show. We talked with the artist about his crazy year, how he’ll spend his Holidays, and all about his bubbling career ahead. – 21-7 Magazine
